Audubon Park Historic District Timeline

1999
Jon Esman, resident of 790 Riverside Drive, makes initial
inquiry about the process for establishing a Historic District
in New York City.  With guidance from the Historic District
Council, he begins research.

2000
Matthew Spady, resident of 800 Riverside Drive, joins Jon
Esman in researching and preparing a Request for
Evaluation for the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

March 2003
Jon Esman submits an RFE for an Audubon Park
Historic District to the LPC, with strong support from
neighborhood residents.

March 2003 to March 2009
Community Board 12 Land Use Committee meets with
representatives of the LPC (twice).

Neighborhood residents, as well as interested supporters
in other parts of the country continue to send email and
letters supporting the proposed APHD.

February 17, 2009
Audubon Park Historic District calendared for hearing.

March 24, 2009
Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) hearing on
the Proposed Audubon Park Historic District.

The project receives strong support from
Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer,
City Councilman Robert Jackson,
Municipal Art Society,
Landmarks Conservancy,
Historic Districts Council,
Historian Michael Henry Adams, author of
Harlem Lost and Found

May 12, 2009
The Landmarks Preservation Commission approves the
proposed Audubon Park Historic District (APHD) at
its May 12th Meeting. 

June 15, 2009
Department of City Planning (DCP) presentation for the
City Planning Commission (CPC)

June 17, 2009
CPC public hearing

July 1, 2009  
CPC forwarded its Report to the City Council.

August 18, 2009  
The Landmarks, Public Siting, and Maritime Use
subcommittee of Committee on Land Use approves
the proposal (Unanimous).

August 19, 2009  
Committee on Land Use
approves the proposal (Unanimous).

August 20, 2009
City Council vote. (RES 2154-2009)
approves the proposal (by consent Roll Call)
